As reported in CFO Tech Britain's largest enterprises now spend more than £320 billion a year on artificial intelligence, with over £66 billion of that flowing to external consultants. A survey of 1,000 senior decision-makers at organisations with annual technology spend above £20 million found that 90% had raised their AI budgets in the past year, yet half of all projects are failing to deliver against expectations. Only 45% of initiatives have clear success metrics defined from the start, and a third take more than six months to show any meaningful results. The most commonly cited cause of failure, at 30%, is an overemphasis on technology at the expense of business outcomes.
For the UK's biggest spenders, those allocating over £100 million to technology annually, the average AI investment stands at £53 million per year, with consultancy fees alone outstripping the entire technology budget of a third of other enterprises.
